“Giulio Natta” Award
Dr. Peter Denifl is the master mind behind the development of a groundbreaking new polyolefin catalyst technology, the Sirius technology. The technology is the biggest change in industrial polyolefin catalyst technology since the development of high yield ZN catalysts several decades ago.
The technology is already in commercial use, and is also the platform for all new catalyst development in Borealis. Today 780 kt PP/annum is produced commercially with Sirius catalyst. In 2014 another 480 kt of PP produced with Sirius catalyst will come on stream, making it a total of 1.22 Mt of PP.
A US made global Multiclient study on polyolefin catalysts refers to the Sirius technology as “a major breakthr ... continua >>

Daphne Selvaggia Cabianca
The work of Dr. Daphne Selvaggia Cabianca, published in the 2012 by the prestigious Journal Cell, is focused on a new molecular mechanism responsible of the human inherited genetic disease, known as facio-scapulo-humeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). Specifically, the research of Dr. Cabianca shows the involvement of a high repetitive fraction of our genome, which in the past was considered DNA garbage because belonging to non-coding (n.c.) sequences, named D4Z4. The scientific research of Dr. Cabianca and colleagues published by Cell indicates that the FSHD onset is related to an epigenetic defect leading the de-repression of genes mapping on the sub-telomeric region of the c ... continua >>
“Nicolò Copernico” Award for Ambient
The thesis of Dr Marco Mella, carried out at University of Ferrara in the laboratory on the synthesis and characterization of polymeric materials at the Department of Chemistry, is part of a currently research topic of great academic and industrial interest on the synthesis and characterization of biodegradable polymer materials as a valid alternative to those used today, such as polypropylene-PP, polyethylene-PE and PET-polyethylene terephthalate and polystyrene-PS. These research topic is supported by a decade European projects, such as the LIFE + and the Seventh Framework Programme and to facilitate the implementation by 2009 of the REACH, i.d. Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation ... continua >>
Special Natta and Copernico Award for the dissemination of the Science
In the year 2011 the Promoting Committee of the Natta and Copernico Awards confers a Special Recognition to Dr. Piero Angela for his untiring and formidable activity of scientific communicator.
The Award consists in a sculptress Mirella Giacomelli’s work representing St. George in the action to kill the dragon.
According to us, Dr. Angela symbolizes the Science defeating the Ignorance.
Piero Angela was born in Turin in 1928.
